The Helsinki Book Fair 24-27.10.2024 at the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre offers programme on 17 stages. There will be two new stages – the Arabia stage, which focuses on craft and hobby literature, and the Busholmen stage for children’s literature in Swedish. In addition to the the star Finnish writers of 2024, more than 30 international guests will be appearing at the fair. “The unbelievable diversity of the programme is the strength of the Helsinki Book Fair,” says Programme Director Ville Blåfield.

Die Deutschen und ihre Demokratie seit den 1980er Jahren” (“A Thousand New Beginnings. Germans and Their Democracy Since the 1980s”) (Siedler Verlag). Statement from the jury: “There is a broad consensus that democracies around the world are in crisis. Yet the question of what it actually means to live democracy is often pushed into the background. Using sources that have received little attention to date, Christina Morina shows how a very different understanding of democracy developed in East and West Germany since the 1980s. Kim de l’Horizon has won the German Book Prize 2022 for their novel “Blutbuch” (DuMont). Statement from the jury: “With tremendous creative energy, the non-binary narrator of Kim de l’Horizon’s novel ‘Blutbuch’ (‘Blood Book’) searches for a language of their own. What narratives exist for a body that eludes conventional notions of gender? The fixed point of the narrative is Kim’s own grandmother – ‘Großmeer’ (literally ‘great sea’) in Bernese German – in whose ocean Kim risked drowning as a child and which they now swim free of through writing. The form of the novel is in constant motion. The Helsinki Book Fair brings together numerous writers of fiction and non-fiction, researchers, scientists, politicians and many others for four days at the Helsinki Exhibitoin and Convention Centre. Theme country Sweden takes part in the event with a show of strength comprising 27 exhibitors and more than 30 performers. The Book Fair will be held 22–25.10 at the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The book world's much awaited grand event, the Helsinki Book Fair, opens its doors next Thursday. The event continues to expand. There is a record amount of floor space at the Fair's disposal right up to the inclusion of Hall 1. The number of programmes on offer has grown too from last year. All kinds of book and culture enthusiasts will gather in the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre 23-26.10.
