The Finnish missions and embassies report that following the application for NATO membership and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Finland’s political leaders featured prominently in the international media. In 2021, it was Finnish athletes who received most mentions in the international news media, but last year President Sauli Niinistö, Prime Minister Sanna Marin, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto rose to the top of the list alongside athletes.

Office of the President of the Republic Press Release 1/2016 5 January 2016 President Niinistö in talks with President Putin President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and President Vladimir Putin of Russia had a brief telephone conversation on Tuesday, 5 January. The discussion was conducted on Russia's initiative. The presidents extended wishes for a Happy New Year and thanked each other their cooperation in the past year. They also talked about Tuesday evening's Ice Hockey World Junior Championships final between Finland and Russia; may the best team win, said both presidents, supporting their own country.
