Helsinki International Boat Show 11–20 February 2011: Elegant boats to quench your thirst for nostalgia

Share
The Helsinki International Boat Show will once again include a magnificent exhibition of classic boats. Lovers of mahogany boats in particular are in store for a treat in the form of the 9.9-metre salon cruiser Wilhelmiina, which was made in Jyväskylä.
Built out of Honduran mahogany, Oregon pine and oak using the carvel planking method in 1905, Wilhelmiina has been restored to her formed glory under the supervision of master carpenter Harri Kääriä. The search is still on for an authentic early-1900s engine. Her present owner wants to find out more about Wilhelmiina's history before choosing a worthy final location for her once restoration is completed.

Another fine example on display is the wooden fiskari-type motor launch Fanny – a classical beauty that hides many secrets. Her 440-horsepower engine makes Fanny Finland's fastest fiskari. She has been altered dramatically in a project that lasted for ten years and Fanny can now carry ten passengers and reach an astonishing speed of 40–50 knots. Her acceleration capabilities are due to a two-phase clutch, a design that is very rarely seen on boats of this type. “This clutch enables Fanny to leave massive powerboats in her wake,” says proud owner Fridde Martin.

The Classic Boats section of the Mahogany Yachting Society (MYS) and the Outboard Museum will once again treat visitors to a wide selection of rarities. Built in 1970, Riva Olympic was named after the Mexico Olympics and is a noble representative of Italian mahogany boat design. The largest vessel on display at the section is the 9x3-metre Melaisa II, the last motorboat to be completed by noted Finnish boat-builders M&A Seppälän Veneveistämö. The smallest boat at the section is the famed racing boat of versatile motorsports champion Otto Brandt. Equipped with a 50-horsepower four-cylinder Evinrude outboard engine from 1936, the boat has not been altered from its original state and visitors can see a film of it in action, winning a Finland-Sweden international test match competed just off central Helsinki in the 1950s.

Sound the whistle and taste the steam

The Finnish Steam Yacht Association's section will be grinding iron and bending brass! A real steamship – fitted with anchor, bridge, compass, wheel, smokestack, ventilation funnels, engine and propeller – will be built at the section. The harbour icebreaker Turso, the only war reparation ship returned to Finland, will also be on display.

The exhibition section will focus on the theme of steamships today. On offer will be information about the Association's activities and steam technology, and anyone interested in nautical history will be encouraged to join. The Association has some 300 members who have registered more than 80 ships and information and pictures on all of these vessels will be presented at the Association's section. Many steamships are still active both at sea and on Finland's larger lakes, and the Steam Yacht Association will be happy to provide more information about steamer cruise opportunities for next summer.

Builders of wooden boats to demonstrate their skills

Finnish boat-making companies have won international acclaim for their diverse skills. Wooden boats, which can meet the needs and wishes of even the most demanding customers, have been built in our country for many centuries. Accordingly, the exhibition section of the Wooden Boat-builders Association is one of the star attractions of the Boat Show year in, year out. The Wooden Boat-builders Association is now celebrating its 20th anniversary and the unique smells, atmosphere and style of the wooden boats on display at its section are sure to please visitors once more. Ten companies will be present at the section and they will arrange presentations on the making or finishing of, among other things, rope rugs, canoes and mahogany boats.
