What will become of technology in 2023? These trends will shape and reform the future

In the year 2023 tech development will focus on AI advancement, the ever-expanding key role of workplace cybersecurity and the rapidly advancing progress of extended reality.
Advancements in the digital field, innovation reshaping work and leisure, as well as new legislation will impact the future drastically. Sustainable business practices will be further reshaped by production innovations and more defined, consumer-friendly regulation.
Old standards give way to evolution
As we welcome the new, many aging standards will be discarded. The pace with which biometric verification will render old password mechanics obsolete will increase in 2023, and the ever-reshaping zero trust software philosophy will continue to build sturdier walls around business vulnerabilities. The subscription economy model will extend to new areas beyond the entertainment and automotive industries, and digital habitation will expand via new virtual environments, e-commerce zones, and hybrid applications.
Alongside software, also hardware manufacturers are taking strides: prospected heirs to smartphones and tablets include devices such as smart contact lenses. The advantages are apparent: when peripherals employ the user to peruse necessary data without hindrance to their field of vision, we are one step closer to the integration of man and machine dreamt up by science fiction authors.
"Questions concerning digital humanization are further fueled by the rapid progress of AI development. This has given rise to speculation as to what areas AI could take over next, and we predict AI development to be the greatest talking point of 2023," says Tuukka Toivonen, VP, Business Management at DNA.
Some sources have deemed Google’s LaMDA chatbot as self-aware, while art created by the Dall-E 2 software has been met with awe.
Expand and improve – but with a reduced carbon footprint?
"Alongside technological evolution, future developments will bear greater emphasis to cull emissions in both the consumer and ICT sectors. Sustainability and eco-friendly practices will be cultivated further by new legislation in 2023," says Toivonen.
USB-C will become the new charging and data connection standard via EU mandate, which will reduce the number of cables clogging up workstations.
The consumer-focused Right to Repair bill is also a key issue, as the proposed bill currently under scrutiny in the European Commission could impact the purchase frequency of new mobile devices massively. One possible mitigation to the current energy crisis is the option to use one’s electric car as a backup power supply.
Finland reigns at the forefront of modern culinary development: 3D printed veggie meat is already making its way to Finnish restaurants and will be available on store shelves in 2023.
These and many other key future developments will be addressed in DNA’s new Tech Trends report.
