All study places in Espoo general upper secondary schools filled in the spring 2023

In total, nearly 4,100 young people of compulsory education age will be able to start their studies in Espoo and Kauniainen.

A total of 2,118 new students (additional 34 in Steinerkoulun lukio) will start their studies in the Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools of Espoo in autumn (2022: 2,079), and 134 will start their studies in Kauniainen General Upper Secondary School.  Places for 66.3 % of students finishing their basic education have been reserved in Finnish-speaking general upper secondary school education for autumn 2023. The number of primary applicants during the joint application period in spring to Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools in Espoo was 2,353. This figure is the same as last year.

In total, 226 primary applicants applied to the Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school in Espoo. Starting places in Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school education were reserved for 60 %. Kauniainen's Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school will have 97 new students in the autumn.

A total of 1,445 new students were accepted to Omnia in the joint application system. There were 1,312 primary applicants to Omnia’s vocational education and preparatory TUVA training. A total of 140 applicants were interested in athletes’ dual career study possibilities at Omnia and 1,113 applicants were interested in a dual degree in a vocational general upper secondary school.

In total, nearly 4,100 young people of compulsory education age will be able to start their studies in Espoo and Kauniainen.

The entry scores were increased for e.g., Otaniemi’s mathematics and natural science programme, both Viherlaakso’s and Matinkylä’s fine arts programmes, Tapiola’s music programme and Matinkylä’s general programme.

The new Matinkylä (formerly Kaitaa) General Upper Secondary School, which will open in the autumn, gathered interest among the applicants. Matinkylä General Upper Secondary School was listed as the primary choice by 271 students finishing their comprehensive school, which was 138 more than the previous year. The school, to be completed in 2024 behind the Iso Omena Shopping Centre, was one of Espoo's most attractive choices. There were 1.75 applicants per each study place in the general programme. Only the Haukilahti sports programme (2.23 applicants per study place) and Otaniemi mathematics and natural science programme (3.06 applicants per study place) ranked above it. However, the highest number of applicants applied to Otaniemi general upper secondary school (622).

The City of Espoo has ten Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools and one Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school, which will have nearly 7,300 students in total this autumn. All Espoo's general upper secondary schools offer high-quality general education, and some also offer weighted-curriculum education or have a special educational responsibility. Two of the general upper secondary schools also have a national development responsibility.

This year, a place in an Espoo general upper secondary school required a grade point average of 7.45 (last year the lowest average grade for student admission was 7.58). The highest grade point average was to Otaniemi General Upper Secondary School, where an average of 9.25 was the admission limit for the general programme.

A total of 1,212 students were selected for Omnia's basic vocational degrees in the joint application system in spring 2023. The highest numbers of students were selected for basic degrees in business (260 students), the electricity and automation sector (100 students) and information and communication technology (129 students). The most attractive programmes were the vocational qualification in media and visual expression, with 6.30 applicants per one study place, and the laboratory technician’s vocational qualification, with 3.00 applicants per one study place.

A total of 233 students were selected for the preparatory training for degree training (TUVA) in the joint application system. The TUVA training started in August 2022 is intended especially for students of compulsory education age who want to consider their future choices and strengthen the skills they have learned in basic education or improve their grades. 

Results of the student admission

The results of the student admission will be published regarding the applicants who have consented to their admission being published on the application form.

The academic year in Espoo general upper secondary schools begins on Wednesday 10 August 2023.
In Omnia, the training of new students will start on 9 August 2023.
School year of TUVA training students will start on 10 August 2023.
