Recollections – Textile Art by Raija Jokinen in Häme Castle 17 May–20 October 2024

On 17 May, the exhibition Recollections showcasing the art of rewarded textile artist Raija Jokinen (born 1960) will open in Häme Castle.

Jokinen’s works are made from dyed linen fibres, combining elements of painting, sculpting, graphics and textile art. The intangible, whisper-thin human figures seem to move between fragility and transience.

Linen has played an important role in Häme Castle for centuries. In the 18th century, it was used to pay taxes, and in the 19th century, when Häme Castle served as a women’s prison, the prisoners used it to make linen textiles. The exhibition also displays items from the collections of the National Museum of Finland, which were used by the female prisoners of Häme Castle to make linen.

Sipoo-based artist Raija Jokinen has received many awards, most recently in 2020 when she was chosen as the textile artist of the year. After graduating from the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Jokinen has held many private and group exhibitions in Finland and abroad.

Recollections– Textile Art by Raija Jokinen will be available in Häme Castle 17 May–20 October 2024 (Kustaa III:n katu 6, Hämeenlinna).
