Number of card payments increased in the first quarter of 2024

In the first quarter of 2024, a total of 547 million card payments were made using Finnish payment cards, which was 31 million (6%) more than in the same period a year earlier. The aggregate value of card payments declined 7% from the last quarter of 2023 to stand at EUR 16.5 billion.

The aggregate value of contactless payments was EUR 5.6 billion in the first quarter of 2024, which was 15% more than in the corresponding period a year earlier. In the first quarter of 2024, a total of 340 million card payments were made on a contactless basis, 8% more than a year earlier.

A total of 96 million card payments were initiated on a computer or mobile device in the first quarter of 2024, which was 23% more than in the first quarter last year. The aggregate value of remote card payments (EUR 4 billion) was 24% more than in the corresponding period a year earlier.

The number of card payments made using a microchip or magnetic stripe declined 14% from the year earlier to 0.1 billion transactions in the first quarter of 2024. In terms of aggregate value, payments made using a microchip or magnetic stripe declined by 14% from year earlier to EUR 7.0 billion in the first quarter of 2024.

The aggregate value of payments made in other euro area countries using Finnish payment cards totalled EUR 1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2024, which was 12% more than in the first quarter a year earlier. The aggregate value of card transactions on Finnish payment cards outside the EU was EUR 0.4 billion in the first quarter of 2024.

Cards issued in other euro area countries than Finland were used to make a total of EUR 206 million of card payments in Finland in the first quarter of 2024, which was 11% less than in the first quarter last year. In the first quarter of 2024, cards issued outside the EU were used to make a total of EUR 0.2 billion of card payments in Finland, or 2% less than in the same period a year earlier.

The total number of credit transfers made in the first quarter of 2024 was 307 million, which was 2% more than a year earlier. At the same time, the value of credit transfers (EUR 932.4 billion) declined 5% from the first quarter 2023.

De finländska hushållen lyfte i maj 2024 exceptionellt lite nya bostadslån, dvs. för 1,1 miljarder euro. Detta är 8,8 % mindre än i maj året innan och 33 % mindre än i maj i genomsnitt åren 2011–2023. Utbetalningarna av bostadslån i maj har senast varit mindre än så 2002. Av de utbetalda bostadslånen i maj 2024 var 100 miljoner euro, dvs. 9 % investeringsbostadslån. Investeringsbostadslån utbetalades för 12,2 % mer än i maj året innan. Ägarbostadslån utbetalades i sin tur 10,4 % mindre än i maj 2023. Genomsnittsräntan på utbetalda ägarbostadslån i maj 2024 var 4,33 % och på investeringsbostadslån 4,52 %. På grund av det exceptionellt låga beloppet av utbetalningar av ägarbostadslån minskade det totala beloppet utestående ägarbostadslån i maj med –1,0 % från året innan. De utestående bostadslånen minskade med –1,2 % och de utestående investeringsbostadslånen ökade med 0,4 % i maj. Ännu för ett år sedan vid motsvarande tidpunkt minskade de utestående investeringsbostadslånen med –1,6 %.

Finnish households drew down exceptionally few housing loans in May 2024. New drawdowns amounted to EUR 1.1 billion, which is 8.8% below the total for May 2023 and 33% below the May average in 2011–2023. The last time the level of housing loan drawdowns was lower in May was in 2002. Investment property loans accounted for EUR 100 million, or 9%, of the housing loans taken out in May 2024. Year on year, these drawdowns increased by 12.2%. Drawdowns of owner-occupied housing loans, in turn, were 10.4% down year on year. In May 2024, the average interest rate on drawdowns of owner-occupied housing loans was 4.33% and on investment property loans 4.52%. Due to the exceptionally low amount of housing loan drawdowns, the aggregate stock of housing loans contracted in May by 1.0% from a year earlier. Suomalaiset kotitaloudet nostivat toukokuussa 2024 uusia asuntolainoja poikkeuksellisen vähän eli 1,1 mrd. euron edestä, mikä on 8,8 % vähemmän kuin edellisvuoden toukokuussa ja 33 % vähemmän kuin toukokuussa keskimäärin vuosina 2011–2023.
