R/V Aranda open to the public at two events this summer

Share

In Helsinki, during the Tall Ships Races, July 4th to 6th, and on Baltic Sea Day, August 29th, the public has the opportunity to explore the research vessel Aranda.  During these events, Aranda will serve as a platform for marine research dissemination supporting the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

During these events, experts from the Finnish Environment Institute will detail Aranda’s marine research activities and answer questions about the Baltic Sea. Visitors can learn about the vessel's research equipment and laboratories and meet the captain on the bridge. There is an audio-visual installation of the underwater noises. To better provide public access, the Aranda will be moored nearby Helsinki's Old Market Hall.

Aranda is tailored for marine research

Launched in Helsinki in 1989, the Aranda is the fifth research vessel in the history of Finnish marine research. She is in fact, the third to bear the name Aranda. While based in the Baltic Sea, Aranda's ice-reinforced constriction enables it to carry out research voyages to the frozen waters of the North Atlantic and the Antarctic.

In 2017–2018, Aranda's length was extended by 7.1 meters, allowing the expansion of laboratory spaces.  Enhancements were also made to improve the vessel's stability and environmental friendliness.

The “new” Aranda is the first vessel designed solely for marine research, equipped for year-round demanding multidisciplinary research. Its advanced laboratory facilities and data processing systems allow the analysis of samples while voyaging.

Step safely aboard Aranda!

Children are welcome on Aranda with a supervising adult. However, it is not safe to move around the vessel with infants in arms. For safety reasons, daycare or other child groups cannot be accommodated. The number of people on board must be limited, so visitors may need to wait before boarding.

Tutkimus: Yhteiskunnan kriisinkestävyyttä vahvistettava paikallista kansalaistoimintaa tukemalla25.3.2025 09:12:19 EET | Tiedote

Paikallista kansalaistoimintaa ei tueta riittävästi, vaikka se on keskeinen osa yhteiskunnan kriisinkestävyyttä, todetaan Suomen ympäristökeskuksen, Helsingin yliopiston ja Demos Helsingin tuoreessa tutkimuksessa. Tutkijat ovat huolestuneita erityisesti haavoittuviin ryhmiin liittyvistä tuloksista, sillä vain kolmannes kansalaisyhteiskuntaa edustavista vastaajista koki, että yhteisön toiminta-alueella ihmiset pitävät haavoittuvimmista huolta.
