The EIA report of the Suomussalmi talc project submitted to ELY center
Tulikivi Oyj's subsidiary Nordic Talc Oy has submitted the Environmental Impact Assessment report (EIA report) of the Suomussalmi talc reserves utilization project to the Centre for Economic Development, Transport, and the Environment of Kainuu (ELY center), which acts as the liaison authority, on June 27, 2024.
The report discusses the environmental impacts of talc quarry and factory planned for the Tulikivi Oyj's Suomussalmi factory area. In the review of the implementation options, the options are to divert the water from the area to either Lake Kivijärvi (option 1) or Lake Saarijärvi (option 2), as well as a zero option (talc production will not start, but soapstone mining will continue).
The decisions about the project are not made in the EIA process, but its goal is to produce information to support planning and decision-making and to increase citizens' access to information and opportunities for influence. The Kainuu ELY center makes the EIA report available for the presentation of statements and opinions and informs about the announcement separately. More information on the matter can also be found on Nordic Talc's website https://nordictalc.fi/vastuullisuus/. ELY center gives a reasoned conclusion from the EIA report, which is attached with the EIA report to the project's permit applications.
Nordic Talc's goal is to continue the operation of the Suomussalmi soapstone quarry and factory by building a modern, carbon-neutral, and traceable talc-producing facility on the current site.
