Major renovation of Aleksis Kiven katu begins in September

Renovation of the old water supply network on Aleksis Kiven katu and the surrounding streets is important to avoid major repairs and pipe failures. The project will start with the construction of the water pipeline along the southern edge of Aleksis Kiven katu. The water supply lines on Kinaporinkatu and Vaasankatu will additionally be improved in the initial phase.   

“Renovation of the water supply in the area is critical due to the old water lines, which are in poor condition, and this is also an opportunity to improve the traffic arrangements,” says City of Helsinki project manager Heikki Kosonen.    

“The works will begin in early September. The project may cause noise, dust, and vibrations, but we endeavour to mitigate any inconvenience for the area’s residents and traffic therein. The noisiest part of the work phases will be the bedrock excavation, which will primarily be carried out by wedging, but the excavation work will be announced in advance,” says GRK Finland’s Sampsa Turpeinen.   

The works will affect traffic in the area    

The project will improve traffic arrangements on Aleksis Kiven katu between Sturenkatu and Hämeentie and on Fleminginkatu. The project will also include the construction of bicycle lanes on Aleksis Kiven katu, as well as a public transport lane between Sturenkatu and Fleminginkatu. A new tram and bus stop will also be installed on Fleminginkatu. 

There will be temporary changes to pedestrian and cycling routes and public transport stops during the works.  

“The temporary routes will be accessible, and access to properties in the area will be maintained at all times,” assures senior foreman Sampsa Turpeinen.  

New look for the linden rows  

The impressive and historical linden rows on Aleksis Kiven katu will receive a new look. This involves the replacement of the current trees with younger ones between Fleminginkatu and Harjukatu. Replacing the trees at once improves the growth conditions for the new trees.   

The trees currently between Harjukatu and Kinaporinkatu will generally remain in place, and the rows will see the planting of new, supplementing trees.  

There will be more trees in the area after the street works are completed.
