Vaasa University of Applied Sciences participated in the Interdisciplinary Creative Education in Deep Tech (INCREDIT) project that was funded by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT). With a budget of 750,000 euros and led by Aalto University, the project involved universities from three different countries. Umeå University from Sweden, Hanken School of Economics and VAMK from Finland, Universidad de La Rioja from Spain and many public and private partner organisations participated in the project. Running from May 2023 to July 2024, the project aimed to develop deep tech knowledge among participating institutions, and to make deep tech sector more approachable while fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among students.

Within the framework of the project, VAMK integrated advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain into a variety of courses across different disciplines.

“Notable achievements include the Therapeutic Methods course, where 81 students practised using AI to create and train a Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) model for therapeutic interactions. In the Financing and Risk Management course 22 students explored AI applications in financial forecasting and risk assessment. In total, VAMK educated 358 students and mentored 92 in the use of artificial intelligence”, elaborates Tero Ulvinen, VAMK’s Project Manager and Senior Lecturer in Information Technology.

Generative AI was a significant focus, with VAMK implementing AI-driven tutor and mentor bots to enhance learning experiences.

“Staff members have also been trained to use AI for administrative and research tasks, increasing efficiency and productivity. We plan to continue this focus, integrating AI education into non-technical fields and bringing AI business content into information technology courses”, continues Ulvinen.

Pedagogical and ethical considerations have been central to VAMK's approach, ensuring that AI is used responsibly and effectively in education. Training sessions have addressed important topics such as ethical AI use, bias management, and privacy protection.

Partnerships and collaboration enable success

Strategic partnerships have been key to VAMK’s progress. The collaboration with Umeå University has involved extensive knowledge-sharing in AI business education, further developing VAMK's capabilities.

“The INCREDIT project has provided valuable insights into how we can integrate generative AI into our courses and practices, preparing our students and staff for the future”, says Ulvinen.

“The project has significantly enriched our business courses. By incorporating AI into our business curriculum, we are equipping students with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving technical landscape”, tells Elina Martin, Director of the School of Business at VAMK.

“The student organisation views this initiative as a crucial step in providing the students with practical and relevant skills for the future”, rejoices Jenna Kivijärvi, Executive Director of VAMOK, the student union of Vaasa University of Applied Sciences.
