LAHTI, FINLAND – Kempower publishes extensive data of its charger uptime and charging success rate for the first time ever. Based on data gathered since 2018, company’s EV fast-charging solutions have achieved an impressive uptime of over 99%. This milestone highlights Kempower’s dedication to providing reliable and efficient charging solutions for EVs, ensuring drivers can depend on Kempower’s technology for a seamless charging experience.
The charging success rate, monitored through ChargEye, Kempower’s cloud-based charging management software, is calculated using data from every charging session carried out on Kempower charger from day one. From December 2018 to July 2024, Kempower has recorded over 13 million successful charging sessions. This extensive data collection allows Kempower to quickly identify and address any issues related to charging, ensuring company’s chargers are almost always available.
Technical success rate
Kempower’s charging solutions have an average technical success rate of 94.3%, with the best charger operators using Kempower’s charging solutions reaching a technical charging success rate of 97.2%. This metric monitors unsuccessful charging attempts caused by technical issues, which can be attributed either to the EV or the charging equipment. Key components of the technical charging success rate metrics include:
- Locking issues: Problems with the plug locking mechanism.
- EV communication issues: Communication problems typically originating from the electric vehicle.
- Charger issues: Failures related to the charging station, such as hardware malfunctions.
By addressing these issues over time, Kempower has significantly reduced the number of unsuccessful charging attempts.
Charger usability success rate
The usability success rate focuses on unsuccessful charging attempts caused by user-related -EV driver related - issues. Kempower’s average usability success rate is 76.3%, with the best operators using Kempower’s charging solutions achieving 91.2%. Factors influencing this metrics include:
- Cumbersome charging apps: Complicated multi-step application interfaces.
- User negligence: Forgetting to connect the plug or authorize.
- User missteps: Abrupt actions by the user, such as stopping the charging session too early.
- Deauthorized charging sessions: Insufficient credits or invalid authorization tags.
Based on the data, Kempower has optimized its user interface and provides guidance to EV drivers throughout the charging session to ensure a smooth charging process. Kempower develops the charging experience continuously.
Overall charging success rate and charger uptime
The overall EV charging success rate combines technical and usability success rates, providing a comprehensive view of successful charging attempts. Kempower’s average overall charging success rate is 70.6%, with the best operators achieving 84.6%.
Kempower’s chargers boast an impressive uptime of over 99%. This metric ensures that the chargers are almost always available for use, contributing to a reliable and efficient charging network. Charging uptime refers to how chargers are operational. Charging uptime is reported as a percentage, with 100% being the maximum. However, achieving 100% charging uptime is impossible when considering for example preventive maintenance and regular software updates. Kempower calculates charging uptime per plug.
Proactive measures and collaborations
Kempower’s proactive measures include working closely with EV manufacturers to optimize both hardware and software. This collaboration ensures that EV drivers can rely on Kempower chargers for a smooth and efficient charging process. By recording and analyzing all charging sessions, Kempower can detect and solve problems early, maintaining reliability, thus the high charging uptime.
“By recording and analyzing all charging sessions continuously, we have built an extensive database that allows for the early detection of issues and the implementation of effective solutions. This approach has enabled us to optimize our charging technology to always aiming for the best charging experience possible, and maintain our position as a leading provider of reliable EV fast-charging solutions,” said Mikko Veikkolainen, Vice President, Research and Innovation at Kempower.
Kempower’s partnership with different EV manufacturers has also led to improvements in vehicle performance and reliability. By sharing data and insights, Kempower has helped manufacturers identify and address issues with specific EV models, leading to recalls and improvements. This collaboration has further strengthened the reliability of Kempower’s charging technology.
