Espoo to celebrate New Year in Tapiola with a unique video and sound installation “Window to the Future”

Tapiola’s Kulttuuriaukio Square and Cultural Centre as an area for celebrations

The New Year’s Eve in Espoo 2025 event will be centred around encounters and doing things together. This year, the event will be organised in Tapiola, in and around the Kulttuuriaukio Square: in addition, the event will extend to the neighbourhood of the square, the halls and premises of the Espoo Cultural Centre, the event venue Kupla and the Venturo House in Tapionpuisto.

As in previous years, the event will be held in the early evening, from 17:00 to 22:00. The reason for the time in the early evening is to ensure that the event will have a feel-good atmosphere and that as many target groups as possible will be able to participate safely. In addition, Tapiola is easy to reach by public transport and on foot from the immediate neighbourhoods.

The main element of the festivities to be a unique, participatory animation installation

The highlight of the event will be an audiovisual spectacle that will be presented three times an hour from 18:00 onwards, combining technology and creativity in a fascinating and imaginative way.

“Window to the Future” is a unique animated video and sound installation that will be projected onto the façade of the Espoo Cultural Centre and bring the building to life. The Kulttuuriaukio Square will be transformed into a time machine offering a glimpse into the future. The window will provide the audience with imaginative and energetic impressions of future New Year’s celebrations. Event-goers will be able to collectively contribute to the event and embellish this immersive journey through time as they will have the opportunity to connect their smart devices to the light system, extending the work to the audience.

The Espoo Cultural Centre will offer plenty to see and experience throughout the evening. Events for the whole family will kick off on New Year’s Eve at 17:00 with the Glow Disco in the Louhi Hall, glitter tattoos, the 360° Panorama Photo Booth and the Snägäri art installation in the Ahjo exhibition space. The adults’ celebrations will continue until the turn of the year in the main foyer of the Future Bar, with disco hits from the 1970s and 80s and an enchanting candle acrobatics show.

The Kupla Club, near the Kulttuuriaukio Square, will feature live and DJ music, while the atmospheric Kupla Bar will be the perfect place to enjoy the evening. The Venturo House in Tapionpuisto will also provide an experience, with the light installation Kudos by visual artist Pasi Rauhala. The installation will be on display until the end of February 2025 and is a part of the EMMA Museum’s exhibition activities.

Espoo is the most sustainable city in Europe that aims to experiment with alternative, sustainable ways of celebrating the New Year as a community. The City of Espoo has not organised a fireworks display after 2008, which has received a lot of positive feedback from both residents and visitors.
