Rando Grid launches smart electricity storage facility in Kuhmoinen – delivered and operated by Cactos, the grid-scale battery park was completed in record time

Rando Grid Oy, owned by JTel Oy (Juha Hulkko) and Rando Ventures Oy (Tero Ojanperä), is responsible for financing and developing the project in collaboration with Cactos Oy, which supplied and operates the electricity storage facilities.

The electricity storage system delivered by Cactos to Kuhmoinen is the first of its kind in Finland and was commissioned exceptionally quickly – in just over half a year. The project kicked off in June 2024, the construction permit was granted in August, the investment decision was made in September, and commercial commissioning took place in January 2025.

The rapid implementation of the project and commercial commissioning show that new energy solutions can be adopted efficiently without long delays.

“I have not heard of anyone delivering a project of this size any faster,” says Cactos CEO Oskari Jaakkola.

In its final size, the electricity storage will consist of 24 Cactos units, with a total output of 5 MW and a storage capacity of 10 MWh. The system will be connected to both the reserve market and the wholesale electricity market, supporting grid stability and the efficient use of energy.

Artificial intelligence will optimise the electricity storage operations in real time, enabling rapid response to changes in the electricity market and smoother integration of renewable energy into the system.

“Smart electricity storage and distributed energy production are key factors in the transition towards a more flexible and efficient energy system. Artificial intelligence enables real-time optimisation and better forecasting, which helps to utilise renewable energy more efficiently,” explains Tero Ojanperä of Rando Grid.

The owners of Rando Grid want to promote a smarter and more decentralised energy system in which artificial intelligence plays a key role in optimising energy management and improving system flexibility. The goal is also to develop the battery park into a digital twin that can be used to simulate and optimise electricity storage operations and enable rapid testing of new energy solutions.

Cactos is responsible for the development, delivery and operation of the electricity storage solution, including system monitoring, optimisation, trading and maintenance under a ten-year maintenance agreement. The battery park is connected to the reserve and wholesale electricity markets, and trading is automated using the Cactos Spine system.
