When the exhibitions end, the Ateneum’s ventilation systems will be renovated, which means that the museum will be closed to the public for about nine months. Until the start of the renovation, the Ateneum will also be showing the collection exhibition The Stories of Finnish Art and the Fokus Gallery exhibition Eino Ruutsalo’s Experimental 1960s. After the renovation, the Ateneum will open a completely new collection exhibition.

The artists featured in the exhibition are Helene Schjerfbeck, Sigrid Schauman, Ellen Thesleff, Elga Sesemann, Hilda Flodin, Sigrid af Forselles, Gunvor Grönvik, Eila Hiltunen, Lea Ignatius, Helmi Kuusi, Laila Pullinen and Essi Renvall.

Dialogue: Elina Brotherus and Hannele Rantala

The exhibition is based on the long friendship between the photographers Elina Brotherus (b. 1972) and Hannele Rantala (b. 1952), and the discussions between the two friends about art. The works are based on the assignments and messages exchanged between the two artists that each interpreted in their own way. The assignments were set in the spirit of Fluxus and poetry. Along with the works by Brotherus and Rantala, a number of forgotten, early-20th-century woman photographers will be highlighted.

Suomen tunnetuimpiin taiteilijoihin kuuluvan Helene Schjerfbeckin teosten näyttely nähdään arvostetussa New Yorkin The Metropolitan Museum of Artissa (The Met) 5.12.2025–5.4.2026.

Helene Schjerfbeck exhibition to be shown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York2.4.2025 07:40:00 EEST | Press release

An exhibition of works by one of Finland’s most famous artists, Helene Schjerfbeck, will be presented at the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York from 5 December 2025 to 5 April 2026. This is the first time that a Finnish artist has landed an exhibition at The Met, one of the most significant art museums in the world. The exhibition is the result of long-term work by the Ateneum and part of the Klassikot maailmalle (“Taking Finnish classics abroad”) project, which takes Finnish visual art abroad with the support of the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.

Tervetuloa Rajojen rikkojat -näyttelyn tiedotustilaisuuteen keskiviikkona 5.3.202518.2.2025 10:00:00 EET | Tiedote

Rajojen rikkojat raivasivat tietä seuraavien sukupolvien taiteilijoille. Monet näyttelyn rohkeista taiteilijoista olivat myöhemmin eläneiden naistaiteilijoiden, kuten Helene Schjerfbeckin ja Ellen Thesleffin esikuvia. Taidehistoriallisesti merkittävä näyttely nostaa esiin aikaisemmin täysin tuntemattomia taiteilijoita ja heidän verkostojaan, sekä esittelee Suomessa ennen näkemättömiä teoksia. Näyttely jatkaa Ateneumin työtä naistaiteilijoihin liittyvän tutkimuksen edelläkävijänä.
