Finnish Packaging Producers Ltd and Remeo Address Plastic Packaging Recycling Challenges in Finland
Finnish Packaging Producers Ltd (FPP) and Remeo are expanding their collaboration with a new agreement focusing on sorting and recycling consumer plastic packaging. Remeo is investing in new recycling technology that will significantly increase domestic processing capacity. This investment enables high-quality recycling of FPP customers’ packaging in Finland and will improve the overall recycling rate.
Investments in consumer plastic waste sorting technology will be completed at Remeo’s Vantaa recycling facility during the second quarter of 2025, at which point the expanded plastic waste processing under the agreement will commence. In line with its strategy, FPP aims to centralize the sorting and recycling of consumer plastic packaging primarily within Finland. Previously, the country lacked sufficient industrial capacity to effectively handle household plastic packaging.
"FPP and Remeo have a track record of successful collaboration, and it is exciting to take the next step together. FPP is implementing a long-term strategy to benefit its customers, and Remeo’s bold investment in a plastic sorting facility in Finland aligns perfectly with this goal. The facility's capacity and capabilities are tailored to meet our needs, especially as the volume of plastic packaging under FPP’s responsibility has significantly increased. Furthermore, we will ensure that recycled plastic can return as raw material for our customers’ use," said Pekka Tommola, CEO of Finnish Packaging Producers Ltd.
"We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Finnish Packaging Producers Ltd. Our collaboration, which began last fall, has taught us a great deal, as we have collected extensive data on the composition of packaging waste over the past year. This data, combined with our sorting expertise, has been the starting point for the continued investments in high-quality plastic sorting at our recycling facility, which opened in 2021," stated Panu Routasalo, CEO of Remeo.
Remeo’s Plastic Processing Capacity Addresses Finland’s Recycling Deficit
In 2025, Remeo will expand its plastic recycling operations. Once the current investments are completed, the Vantaa recycling facility will have a capacity to process 100,000 tons of plastic packaging, nearly quintuple the current processing capacity in Finland.
