RiverRecycle launches Kinalumsan River cleanup in Cebu with Prime Infra
Riverrecycle Philippines, a subsidiary of Finland-based Riverrecycle Oy, has officially launched a major river cleanup operation in Cebu City’s Kinalumsan River, thanks to a partnership with Prime Infra Foundation and Prime Integrated Waste Solutions (PWS). This collaboration marks a critical milestone in the fight against plastic pollution in one of the Philippines’ most affected urban rivers.

Under this joint initiative, RiverRecycle has deployed its signature boom system along a key stretch of the Kinalumsan River in Barangay Mambaling. Designed to intercept floating waste before it reaches the ocean, the system is expected to prevent approximately 97,000 kilograms of debris—including over 13,000 kilograms of plastic—from entering marine ecosystems annually.
“Plastic pollution is a global crisis, and rivers are our frontline defense,” said Anssi Mikola, CEO of RiverRecycle. “Partnering with Prime Infra and PWS allows us to scale our efforts and deliver a complete solution—from collection and sorting to recycling and disposal. Many projects lack a link in the waste value chain. With PWS in Cebu, we have a partner to manage significant waste volumes, aiming for zero landfills.”
The project was made possible through Prime Infra Foundation’s support. Collected waste is sorted and processed at PWS’s state-of-the-art material recovery facility in Cebu, contributing to the city’s circular economy and minimizing landfill dependency. Plastic waste will be converted into durable construction boards at RiverRecycle’s local facility.
Cara Peralta, the Prime Infra Market Sector Lead for Waste, states, “There’s so much to work on in terms of waste management and proper disposal in the country, and part of that involves the collection of waste. When you partner with companies like RiverRecycle, which focuses on different aspects of logistics, such as the rivers where waste accumulates, then it is in perfect synergy with what we do at PWS”.
This project forms part of the broader Cebu River Waste Eradication Project, a flagship campaign in the Philippines. The initiative aims to demonstrate a scalable, replicable model for sustainable river waste management in coastal cities across the country and beyond.
