World Economic Forum’s UpLink selects RiverRecycle as top innovator

Share
The open innovation platform UpLink, hosted by the World Economic Forum, has selected RiverRecycle as top global innovator of their Global Plastic Innovation Network. Only eleven companies worldwide qualified for this status after a rigorous review process.

The Global Plastic Innovation Network is an open collaboration platform designed to harness the power of innovation and accelerate high-impact solutions that can help to eradicate plastic pollution. It is hosted by UpLInk, the World Economic Forum’s open innovation crowdsourcing platform.

To prevent plastic debris from reaching the oceans, RiverRecycle installs proprietary river cleaning technology on the banks of the most polluted streams. Associated land-based waste collecting and sorting points are accessible to the hosting community. The resulting material is then recycled and sold to maintain the overall system.

“Our objective is to support local communities in fighting plastic pollution without the need of their direct economic investment,” says Anssi Mikola, founder and CEO of RiverRecycle. “While in a circular economy, our concept is financially sustainable, its innovative imprint is still unusual. The recognition offered by UpLink will help us assert the distinction and trustworthiness needed to reach and help more communities. We are very glad to be part of this influential network and we are looking forward to collaborating and learning from other game-changers.”

In the UpLink platform, The Global Plastic Innovation Network, is led by Global Plastic Action Partnership and is supported by UK DEFRA and Global Affairs Canada. The network clusters solutions in five different focuses, and RiverRecycle innovation acts in the frame of “Materials & Product Design” and “Waste Management & Recovery”. The goal is to gather solutions to the world’s most pressing issues and accelerate their impact by linking the innovators to a growing network of experts, industry leaders and investors and decision-makers.
